2 Weeks Sober From Coffee: My Anxiety/Stress, Ruminating/Worrying, And The Intensity Of My Thoughts Are Way Down.

Coffee is also bad for your teeth. They keep saying coffee is healthy, but that is probably because the coffee is the only somewhat healthy thing the average person consumes. Coffee also messes with your sleep and mental health. Coffee is also addictive. It took some effort, but I think I'm over coffee. peace! ๐Ÿงก๐Ÿ––๐ŸŒฑ๐Ÿ’ง

Lesson In The Power Of Mindset In The Weightloss Show "My 600lbs Life".

"My 600lbs Life" is a reality show in which people get FREE weightloss surgery if they manage to lose some weight independently first. Which is required for surgery. There are two clear types of people on the show and based on those two types you can tell from the beginning of the show which people are going to succeed and which people are going to fail. The two types are:  the ones who take personal responsibility for their choices,  and the ones who play the victim, who lie, complain, make stupid excuses, manipulate, blame others...  Can you guess the type that doesn't succeed? peace! ✌️ ๐Ÿงก๐Ÿ––๐ŸŒฑ๐Ÿ’ง

Future-Proof Your Life, And Start With Your Identity.

Make A New Year's Resolution, But Don't Tell Anyone Because You Might Have To Fail 101 Times.

Shock Humor Is Not Worth The Laughs.

I thought I was a comedian, but I was actually a clown. My mind is always looking for the joke. In the winter of 2023, at the age of 41, I struck up a conversation with an 18 year old girl in a tattoo parlor in Ghent. I was waiting for my ink session. She had had hers and was waiting for a friend to get a tribute tattoo to her late mother. The girl said she had gotten a little heart on her thigh. I made a terrible joke: "Now they will be able to identify you when they find your body". She was shocked. I made a half apology saying: "Sinister joke...". My reactions always come delayed but I cringed at myself and still do to this day, 2 years later. I traumatized myself, again. Shock humor might get a reaction which might sound like laughter. You might also make people uncomfortable and damage your reputation. It's not that funny. Not everything that pops up in your mind is brilliant. Even if someone tells you that you are hilarious, an edgelord is not something to...

When You Take A New Drug, The Chance Is Not Zero That It Will Completely Derail Your Life.

People will often tell a story about their drug use that isn't true. And they probably don't even realize they are fibbing. They will tell you they don't use a lot. They are not addicted. And you might believe that untill you go on a weekend trip with them. They say it is kind of a medicine, that it relaxes them, that it makes them creative or helps them work. Which may have been true in the honeymoon phase. But those days are long gone. It's like an addiction wants to protect itself and spread itself. Often without much self awareness of the addict. It's like a brainworm controls you. Don't believe the junkies. Just Say No. The chance is not zero that you will wreck your life. peace! ✌️ ๐Ÿงก๐Ÿ––๐ŸŒฑ๐Ÿ’ง

My Impression Of The South American Jungle From Reading Werner Herzog.

Some time ago I wanted to see  The Werner Herzog Jungle Speech again. I was having an anti-tech moment and decided to order a Herzog book, about his time filming a movie called "Fitzcarraldo" in The Jungle, from a local bookshop instead. The book is called: Conquest Of The Useless. I just finished it. Took me some 3 months. I have to read every passage at least 5 times because my mind is always going in all directions. The Jungle is brutal. It's non-stop misery, murder and decay. The people drink, lie and steal. Already in the early 80ties, The Jungle is full of animals that I think don't belong: rats, pigs, sheep, ducks, chickens, cats, dogs,... Now The Jungle is dying. When everything is dead, there will be no more suffering. And no more beauty. peace! ✌️ ๐Ÿงก๐Ÿ––๐ŸŒฑ๐Ÿ’ง

Drugs Maken Veel Kapot (Drugs Ruin Lives)

I know a lot of people who made a mess of their lives because of drugs. I include nicotine, weed, junkfood and alcohol in drugs. Really, you can get addicted to anything. Yesterday something happened, which isn't my bussiness to tell, that made me swear off all drugs for good. I'm not going to support my loved ones doing drugs in any way anymore. Without trying to control their behavior. I unpublished my Trip Guide and Trip Reports. A lot of people have the tendency to want to spread their own beliefs and behavior. Religion, politics, diets, hobbies,... drugs. It's what we do as social animals. Often without thinking. Often your brain tells you you are doing something wrong, but you ignore it. You argue it away. But sometimes a catastrophy happens, and your nose is pressed against the facts, and you have to learn a lesson. Adopt new rules, based on reality, and stick to them even if the emotion fades. The best thing is to learn from other people's mistakes. And listen t...

Make A Habit Of Not Cutting Corners, Even At Home.

My mind is constantly trying to get me to half-ass things. Half-assery is perhaps an evolutionary strategy to save energy. But there is plenty of food in the supermarket, for the time being. Be mindful of your emotions. Your mind will signal you to quit, to do a poor job, to ignore that work you saw, to go do that easy quick fix pleasurable thing instead... Do not push down your emotions. Do not fight them. Let it happen. But don't listen to these unproductive emotions either. Do not engage. Do the right thing anyway. And when you do the hard thing, you will feel accomplishment. Take a moment to enjoy your achievement. Your spic and span kitchen. Your delicious meal. The mental growth from reading that book with great attention, instead of watching that mindless video. Discomfort is an opportunity to grow as a person. Do the hard thing. Do the right thing. Don't let your Monkey Mind be in control of your actions. Always Be Moving Forward. peace! ✌️ ๐Ÿงก๐Ÿ––๐ŸŒฑ๐Ÿ’ง

Eat Breakfast. Or Don't.

In my childhood, we didn't eat Breakfast or Lunch. We were sent to school without food or drinks and then had a meal in the evening and snacks. People say Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. They say: Breakfast like a King, Lunch like a Prince and Dinner like a Pauper. Lord knows I've tried. When I first tried to eat Breakfast I would gag. That's not the case anymore, but even when I eat Breakfast and Lunch, I have a massive overwhelming hunger attack in the evening. While hunger is easy to resist during the day. I tried for years. But have decided not to fight my nature anymore. I eat two meals: Lunch and Dinner. At work for Lunch I eat Bananas and Nuts. I don't Snack or drink Liquid Calories. I manage to very slowly lose weight that way. 100 grams per week. Common advice is though, not to eat or drink 3 hours before bedtime. peace ✌️ ๐Ÿงก๐Ÿ––๐ŸŒฑ๐Ÿ’ง

You Need To Be In Shape For The Great Simplification.

Bad news about The Living Planet tends to make me go: Stuff It and I drop my discipline. However, I don't want to turn my back to the catastrophe that is unfolding. I want to grieve. I have hope in the form of Peak Oil. The decline of oil production, which is inevitable however long it takes, will spell The End of physical economic growth. And perhaps financial economic growth. When I read bad news I will try a trick from now on. Instead of living for the moment when faced with poor prospects, I will say to myself: You must prepare for The Great Simplification. Don't smoke em while you can buy em. peace! ๐Ÿงก๐Ÿ––๐ŸŒฑ๐Ÿ’ง

(NOT AI ;-) ) Life Update: The Surprising Benefits Of Healthy Living.

Feeling like I'm letting my 5 readers down by having posted AI texts for the last 3 posts. So here is an authentic human post. I'm surprised by the benefits of my healthy lifestyle. When my father died in October 2021 I started researching healthy lifestyles. I was shocked by how big an impact lifestyle has on health and learned things I should have known but didn't. My father died at 69 years of age of a heart attack and the pack of potato chips I brought him every day, at his request, most likely sent him into the ground sooner. I am rather compulsive with social media and when I started finding out health facts, I posted them on my socials thinking I was saving lives. If only my dad had known these factoids. Some people responded with their ego. Some behind my back. Some thought it was useful. I was posting health advice before I managed to succeed in my goals. Criticism and gossip doesn't feel good. Some people are not supportive of your goal to improve yourself. It...

Gemini AI On Managing Ruminating / Worrying / Overthinking / Mental Loops.

Hello. I am so glad you reached out. It is incredibly draining to carry the weight of a ruminative loop for weeks at a time. Please know that you are not alone in this; it is a very common feature of how the human brain processes distress, but that doesn't make it any less painful. Here is an explanation of what is happening in your brain during these loops, followed by actionable strategies to help you step off the merry-go-round. Part 1: How Rumination Works To stop the loop, we have to understand why the brain starts it. 1. The "False Problem-Solving" Trap Evolutionarily, your brain is designed to solve problems to keep you safe. When you feel "put down" or read something hateful, your brain identifies a threat to your social standing or your values.  * The Glitch: Your brain thinks, "If I replay this scenario enough times, I will find a solution, understand why it happened, or protect myself from it happening again."  * The Reality: Rumination is n...

Managing Procrastination: Getting Started On A Chore And Keeping Momentum (Gemini AI)

Hello! It is a pleasure to step in as your digital therapist today. First, I want to validate exactly what you are feeling. Struggling to start (inertia) and struggling to finish (stamina) are not signs of laziness or incompetence. Often, they are signs of perfectionism, overwhelm, or simply how your brain regulates executive function. The good news is that we don’t need to change your personality; we just need to "hack" your workflow. Here is a therapeutic approach to breaking the cycle of procrastination. Phase 1: Breaking the Inertia (How to Start) The hardest part of any project is the first five minutes. The brain views a large, undefined task as a "threat" to your energy and comfort levels. 1. The "Salami Slice" Method When you look at a project like "Clean the house" or "Write the report," your brain freezes because the task is too big. You need to slice it down until the slice is so thin it looks ridiculous to say "no"...

I Asked AI: What Are Some Toxic Behaviors I Might Be Doing That I'm Unaware Of.

That's a really insightful and self-aware question to ask. Recognizing potential blind spots is the first step toward positive change. Often, toxic behaviors we don't realize we're doing stem from insecurity, poor coping mechanisms, or learned habits. Here are a few common examples: ๐Ÿ™…‍♀️ Communication Traps  * "Mind-Reading" or Making Assumptions: Assuming you know what others are thinking or feeling without asking, and then reacting to that assumption. This can lead to unearned defensiveness or accusation.  * Passive-Aggressive Behavior: Expressing negative feelings indirectly instead of addressing the issue head-on. This might look like subtle sarcasm, backhanded compliments, or the silent treatment.  * Oversharing/Seeking Constant Validation: Using conversations to dump emotional baggage on people without checking if they are in a place to receive it, or constantly fishing for compliments and reassurance.  * Interrupting/One-Upmanship: Regularly cutting people...

(EN) Ultra Short Guide To Eating Mostly Plants

Eating mostly plants is the most impactful choice you can make for the living planet, animals, your body, and your soul. If humankind went Plant Based, we would free up 75% of farmland, which in turn represents 50% of habitable land. If we eat less fish, the oceans will rebound. Multiple scientific studies prove that plant protein is as good at building muscle as animal protein. According to The Academy Of Nutrition And Dietetics, a well planned Plant Based diet can be healthy at any age.  If you eat mostly plants, you need to plan carefully and supplement: You need to eat plenty of: Legumes (Beans, Chickpeas, Greenpeas, Lentils, Soy Products | dried raw legumes need to be soaked in plenty of water for minimun 12 hours, then cooked for a minimum of 60 minutes),  Whole Grains (Whole Grain Bread, Whole Grain Pasta, Sweet Potatoes, Oats, Rice...) How Dopamine Works

This post is a summery of work by neuroscientist Wolfram Schultz via Nate Hagens . Wolfram measured dopamine neurons in monkey's during reward learning experiments. The monkey's would learn to receive a fruit juice following a light or sound que. When the reward was unexpected, the dopamine would surge. The next time, the dopamine would be triggered at the light or sound que. Not at the reward itself. If the monkey did not get a reward after the que, it would experience a dip in dopamine. A punishment. The key insight is: dopamine is the difference between expected reward and actual reward. And they fire most when reward is better than expected. Stop firing when reward is matched with expectations. Decrease firing when the reward worse than expected. Dopamine is a prediction-error system that drives learning and motivation, as opposed to just a pleasure button. We become tolerant to positive circumstances. Surprise is more rewarding. Dopamine is training us to learn and seek ou...

Realistic Hope (Doom Binge Made Me Gain 3kg)

You may have noticed I've been on a doom binge. (now removed from my blog) I get a thrill from bad news. It's impulsive. Little packets of dopamine. But doomer shit does make me lose hope, and then I tend to live for the moment, drop my discipline, and I gained 3kg in two weeks. I can feel it around my waste. We need hope. But realistic hope. But we can build a low footprint society, where people are happy anyway. Eat mostly plants. https://veganhealth.org/ Drink tapwater. Go carfree. Have small families. Don't fly. Experiencing Your Cravings And Emotions With Awareness Can Make Them Dissolve

If I stay up past 21h00 (9pm) I get an overwhelming hunger attack like clockwork. It doesn't matter if I'm already full. And sometimes I get a bad feeling. Like when I make a social gaffe. For instance, recently a female friend hugged me, and I lifted her off the ground in a bear hug. I was cringing afterwards, worried I overstepped a boundary. With Mindfulness, you can make Cravings and Bad Feelings go: poef (gone). When you feel overwhelmed, welcome that feeling, and sit with it. Say to the feeling: "Hello there, I will take care of you". Do not run from a bad feeling. Do not push it down. Do not react to it either. Do not indentify with your feeling. Remind yourself: "This feeling is not who I am". Experience your feeling with awareness, curiosity and objectivity. Accept that it is there. Often, when you look into your feeling, you will realize that it is not substantial, and it will dissolve. If a storm is brewing in your mind, or a harmful urge is trigg...

Motivation: Use YouTube As A Daily AA Meeting

Lower Your Barrier (Babysteps Instead Of Grand Ambitions)

I believe moderation is a lie. For me at least. I learned that the hard way. If you want to quit an addiction, you have to say goodbye to that habit forever. But being too ambitious about your new resolutions can paralyse you.  When I was fat, for a period there I took long walks. Even though my foot hurt, probably from my weight. Then my brother wanted to do "De Dodentocht": a Belgium-famous 100km 24 hour walk, and do it before my 95 year old grandfather died. My grandfather was an avid walker, and had done that challenge multiple times. Even as a pensioner.  I decided to enroll as well (€60), with the ambition to loose the weight in time, and then just stopped walking. I think because the task was too daunting. I didn't do the walk. My brother, skinny, was at the start. He made numerous mistakes that he was warned about. His walk was hell. It was raining buckets and his feet were wet for instance. He was carrying bottles of water that weren't necessary. Wrong shoes....

Motivation: Think Of The Person You Will Be In 7 Years

Motivation is really important in making good choices in the present moment. I used to be cynical (stupid) and rejected this idea. But it finally got through to my thick head. Willpower is more a matter of insight, tricks and tools, than of fighting your own mind. One of those tools is a strong motivation. One trick to be motivated is to think of the person you will become in 5 or 10 years. Every 7 years, all your body’s cells are replaced and you are a different person. You must be kind to that person, who is not you anymore. If you wouldn't harm a random person on the street, you shouldn't harm the new person you will become. Give future-you the best chance possible. As an act of kindness towards a fellow human.  Become aware that you are making choices every day. Those choices, every single one, will determine the life of future-you. When you are about to engage in harmful behavior, including alcohol, nicotine and junkfood, think of yourself in 10 years time. Choices become ...

Say Goodbye To Your Addiction Forever. (Junkie Logic)

I am sober 126 days, after about 3 years of struggle, trying to quit. Sobriety is the ultimate high. My mind is working much better. I feel great, and motivated, now that I am not chemically messing with my reward circuits. Being sober, I recognize my own previous Junkie Logic in my friends. One thing in particular is that they cannot imagine never getting high or drunk again. So they come up with all sorts of tricks and rules to try and moderate. Only the weekends. Only at parties. Only once per month. I know someone who keeps their stash at another addicts house, to create a barrier, thereby exposing their friend to their addiction, when they end up showing up at their place several times per week. And it's all steaming BULLSHIT. It's Junkie Logic. They all fall off the wagon eventually. A friend said not long ago that they were going to quit for a month, after having psychotic symptoms. A week later they said they used again, but it's okay, "they have it under contr...

Things from my past keep surfacing in my mind. More often than not, unpleasant things. Things someone did to me, or things I did to someone that make me feel guilty and cringe. Often these actions were words. These things will only go away when your mind goes or you die. However, with mindfulness, you can learn to carry them with you. Instead of letting them drag you down.  Split yourself in two, when unpleasant thoughts surface. Split into the storm, and an observer of the storm. Experience your negative thoughts and emotions with the energy of curiosity instead of fear. When you become aware that your thoughts and emotions are excited, stop and ask yourself: what is this mind formation? Don't push it down. Don't try to run from it. But don't identify with it. Don't engage with it. Say to yourself: these thoughts and emotions don't define me.  Take your mind to the present moment: to your breath, your body and your senses. Let the storm in your mind float away. Tra...

Should You Buy Another Ticket In The Cancer Lottery?

You can choose to live a life of intentionality, of mindfulness and awareness, instead of living life on autopilot, lost in thought loops about the past or the future. People take numerous actions every day that decide the difference between living to a healthy old age, or dying prematurely, or worse, becoming handicapped. Some unhealthy actions build up over time. Like eating too many calories, too much bad saturated fat, too much salt, too much not-moving-your-body, too many short nights of sleep...  Some actions are more like a lottery. For instance, 60% of cancers are due to lifestyle. (10% inhereted, 30% environment) Tabacco, alcohol, processed meat and red meat cause cancer. Every time you expose your cells to these poisons, could be the time you cause the DNA mutation that triggers cancer.  It could be the very first cigarette you smoke, or the 100 thousandth cigarette that gives your body cancer. Every drink of alcohol could also be the one that gives you cancer. Or ev...

Don't Turn Your Mental Health Diagnosis Into Your Identity.

When I got diagnosed with schizophrenia, it became my new autistic obsession. I would infodump on people about the major psychotic episode that led to my diagnosis. The schizophrenic author of the book "The Center Cannot Hold" said it didn't define her, and I disagreed. It does explain who you are, I thought. But I now think that's a mistake. Mental Health diagnosis are clusters of symptoms that suggest a certain treatment is needed, as opposed to another one. I am not experienced enough to know if this is the correct approach. Different diagnoses often have overlapping symptoms. Psychosis,  for instance, is a symptom of many different diagnoses. I started thinking I might be something because of Valerie. She had a borderline diagnosis, according to her father on a chat with my brother. I thought I might be narcissistic because of my black and white thinking at the time. I didn't want to flatter myself with a more fashionable diagnosis. I thought I might be border...

Reasons I Love Being Sober.

My Mind Works Better.  My memory and concentration is much improved. I am present. I am witty and funny. I don't repeat myself. I'm adaptable. I'm creative and motivated. I feel and understand much deeper. I have the best words. I Enjoy Life More.  If you don't dampen your feelings with drugs (including alcohol and nicotine), you enjoy the simple things in life. You enjoy what is most important: other real life living creatures and plants. I love small talk with my neighbors. I love banality. I love living every moment. My Stress Is Much Lower.  Because of tolerance, which is the brain seeking out a baseline (homeostasis), drugs (including alcohol and nicotine) are not only the cure to your chronic stress and depression, they are also the cause of your stress and depression. Your brain adapts to being high or drunk, and the moments you are sober, you will be dysregulated. You need your drugs just to feel normal. After a few months of sobriety and withdrawal, you will fe...

There Is No Destination, Only The Journey.

Artists who have completed a work, often fall into a depression. As if they have no purpose, now that they have achieved their goal. I heard a proverb, I think from Vietnam, that says "When you are on a mountain, and you see another mountain in the distance, you want to be on that other mountain." I'm probably butchering it. I was with friends on a mountain in Albania, and indeed, they saw another mountain in the distance, and risked their lives to get there. I had to think of the Vietnamese saying. I stayed behind while my brain was giving me all sorts of scenarios that they had fallen to their deaths. I tried to just enjoy the waterfall I was at. No one died, but they did encounter dangerous situations. I would have frozen in fear. Thich Nhat Hanh says of walking meditation, to realize with every step "I have arrived, I am home". Enjoy the present moment. Don't live in an unreliable past or a hypothetical future. Just enjoy the journey. Brazilian writer Pa...
