Shock Humor Is Not Worth The Laughs.
I thought I was a comedian, but I was actually a clown. My mind is always looking for the joke.
In the winter of 2023, at the age of 41, I struck up a conversation with an 18 year old girl in a tattoo parlor in Ghent. I was waiting for my ink session. She had had hers and was waiting for a friend to get a tribute tattoo to her late mother.
The girl said she had gotten a little heart on her thigh. I made a terrible joke: "Now they will be able to identify you when they find your body". She was shocked. I made a half apology saying: "Sinister joke...".
My reactions always come delayed but I cringed at myself and still do to this day, 2 years later. I traumatized myself, again.
Shock humor might get a reaction which might sound like laughter. You might also make people uncomfortable and damage your reputation.
It's not that funny. Not everything that pops up in your mind is brilliant. Even if someone tells you that you are hilarious, an edgelord is not something to be. Be enlightened instead.
It's better to make dad jokes than cynical jokes. It's better to be compassionate.
Free speech doesn't mean you have to say everything you are thinking. You should censor your thoughts if you suspect that they are harmful. Real life is not a stage.
peace!
