A Few Tips On How To Become Smarter
I was a stupid kid. I believed studying was cheating. I thought you should just know stuff and how to do things without practice. I also didn't like learning about things because I wanted to preserve the mystery. I also suffer from something called 'avolition', which I called 'the resistance'. It's common in schizophrenics, and is described as a mental paralysis when you have to perform a boring task. Like doing your homework. I think most people feel some resistance when they have to do something boring. But fuck avolition. Chose pain, not pleasure.
People have genetic talents, but also a great capacity for improvement. Have a growth mentality. Don't have a limiting mindset, while also having realistic self-knowledge.
Don't believe you are smart. My brain is often telling me: you are one clever cookie. But you have to constantly consider that you may be over-reaching. Anticipate failure. Your belief about a person might be wrong, for instance. Stay humble.
Maintain a healthy lifestyle. You don't exist in a spiritual realm, as far as we can tell. Your mind is a physical thing and part of your body. Many of your mind-chemicals are produced by your gut, for instance. Eat a healthy diet with lots of whole plants, exercise, sleep well, brush your teeth and maintain a social life. 3 to 5 grams of creatine per day can boost your cognitive capacity. Don't take supplements without doctors advice and don't exceed the daily recommendations.
Be mindful of your information diet. Chose to do the hard thing. Watching stupid things makes you stupid. Doomscrolling can be addictive, take your motivation and make you insufferable company. Edgelords like Herman Brusselmans, Tom Van Grieken or Tom Lanoye (people who say extreme things) can make you nervous, cause you to think too much and get stuck in thought loops. Celebrity gossip is a colossal waste of the limited time that you are alive. When you click on something, ask the question: "Will this help me grow?" "Will this make my life better?" Thrill-seeking information behavior will make you miserable in the long run.
Have many sources. Don't just follow that one person. Fact-check constantly and try to disprove your beliefs. Live in doubt.
Do many different things. Push your boundries every day. Chess, dancing, news articles you wouldn't read, DIY projects, new recipes,...
